Morning folks, and I’ll be arriving into Perth WA on the same day as the touring British & Irish Lions rugby team. They’re fresh from a devastating 8 try thumping of the Barbarian team in South Africa, I’m the survivor of 6 consecutive one night – wine event – stands through Queensland and northern New South Wales. It’s been busy, but the wines have been really well received, as have my bagful of new stories from the road travels – most recently through England and Scotland. So here’s your armchair guide to those 6 one night stands:
1. Toowoomba – a double header really – an afternoon masterclass for the folks from the Downs Club in their lovely old clubhouse:
That’s Rash helping out – thanks to Greg for the limousine duties up there and back, to Dave Griffin for setting it all up, and to Luke – very able bodied Cellarman for the Downs Club for all the top glassware and every decanter on site!
After the masterclass, it was dinner in the private dining room at Fitzy’s Fibber Magees pub, right in the heart of downtown Toowoomba. The ‘Fitzy’ in that sentence is staunch Yalumba supporter Brad Fitzgibbon, current publican and owner of the hotel, and our dinner was on the night before the family’s 12th anniversary of buying the pub, so there was much toasting throughout the course of the evening. Resident chef Marc Kennedy absolutely blew all and sundry away with his fabulous food – this is where the hi tech boffins need to invent ‘scratch and taste’ apps for I pad and I phone so you can get an inkling of how good this dinner was. My photos are a poor substitute at best! Lucky for us that Marc has worked with our wines several times before, so he invented one dish for our Viogniers purely because he likes the wine so much!
