Evening, folks, we’re at Alex’s hole-in-the-wall, 50-seater restaurant here in Ascot Vale – Stratus 233 – and look at the sign on the door “We are fully booked tonight”. This is a great way to start their first ever wine dinner!
That’s looking back towards the street – with the ‘starlight’ back wall.
And here’s the opening dish – “Lemongrass poached crayfish, grilled king prawns, pomello, beanshoot, Asian herb salad, palm sugar dressing” – with the aromatic white twins 2010 Hill Smith Estate Chardonnay and 2010 Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier. Spot on!
And on to the reds. The 2010 Strapper – Grenache + Shiraz + Mataro – deserves a run on a night like this, and the chefs put together some fabulous tortellinini to go with. In fact, it’s “Confit duck tortellini, chestnut puree, shaved black truffle, fresh herbs” and this is our Rhonda – the 2002 Signature – Sexton, in charge tonight!
