Where are we tonight? Yorkey’s Knob

6.56pm, Thursday 24th May, On the Deck, Yorkeys Knob Sport Fishing Club, Tropical North Queensland, Australia

Evening, folks, we are just about to get under way with tonight’s dinner – at the Sport Fishing Club – on the deck above the marina – at Yorkeys Knob. It’s pitch black out but just an hour ago – the squall was directly overhead, no wind at all, and this is what it looked like looking back toward Cairns downtown.

And here are the reds on tonight’s menu – that’s our man on the ground in Tropical North Queensland on the left, and from the Club on the left is all round good guy manager Shane and front of house star Amanda.

The folks are all sitting down, finishing their flutes of Jansz NV, the rain has stopped (for now), the breeze has picked up out of nowhere, and I can actually breathe! The locals are reaching for hoodies and jackets! Any minute now the two Viogniers – 2010 Eden Valley and 2009 Virgilius – will be poured to go with Chef Colin’s “Thai marinated fillet of pork fresh herb and lychee salad with a vanilla bean and palm sugar glaze”.

So we’re going to try and send this out ‘live’ as it all happens tonight, not sure how we’ll go!

Ok next course. The Coonawarra Cabernet double – 2010 The Cigar and 2008 The Menzies – with “Confit of rabbit, with a rich thyme jus, encased in traditional pastry, topped with flaky fill and a bush tomato compote”.  A very smart rabbit pie with tomato chutney – apparently was fab as I wasn’t quick enough – this last bit of Ben’s was all I could get!

Hah! Intercepted this going to the table – the beef course! With Shiraz of course – 2006 Octavius and 2010 Patchwork.

Wow, everyone wants a yarn tonight! Taking forever to get around the tables – but that’s a good problem to have!

That’s Shane in the photo above, showing off the dish that he and Colin came up with at a cheese tasting / BBQ – that they thought might do well with a Cabernet Shiraz blend. So “Victorian spring lamb rump, marinated and sliced, served on grilled ciabatta with blue cheese and wild rocket” was sent out with our 2009 The Scribbler and new release wall of fruit 2008 The Signature. Only thing I can tell you is nothing whatsoever went back into the kitchen on those plates!

11.12pm Last entry for the night – early flight tomorrow. I missed the last cheese course, talked about the 2011 FSW8B Botrytis Viognier, picked up my new “I’m now sponsored by Yorkeys Knob Sport Fishing Club” board shorts and got a cab back to Cairns downtown.

  2. Thanks Jane for making my work a fun place to work. I enjoy these nights especially. One time I will sitting down and enjoying the wine too….. Sigh…. MAYBE next time??
